Bridge the Road to Hunger 5K
Posted: October 14, 2009
Bridge the Road to Hunger, a 5K night race held in Estero, took place Oct. 13 on the Estero Parkway overpass, which is scheduled to open to traffic Oct. 23, 2009.
Race Time at Last!!! Last night was my first race of the season. I think it finally cooled down enough to feel "comfortable" racing down here in southwest Florida. But then again, what is comfortable about an all out sprint to the finish line, and a gangbusting pace twice over a 1 mile stretch of real estate hovering above I-75 in Estero? OK, so maybe to some people a 6:46 mile pace isn't "gangbusting"; but hey, it is good for me...
I wasn't sure what to expect, not having run any night races before. Afterall, This was only the second "night run" ever to be held in Lee County. Would it still be hot out? Would my time suffer because I was worn out from the day? Would there be a good turnout? Overall, it was a Success!!! Weather was great, over 250 runners/walkers showed up, and my time did not suffer...LOL.
Here are some of the details from the race...
--Proceeds are going to the South Fort Myers Food Pantry, a Harry Chapin Food Bank offshoot run by a coalition of churches. The pantry has served more than 8,000 adults and children since it was formed during the summer of 2008.
--The race began and ended at Germain Arena: address: 11000 Everblades Parkway, Estero (off Ben Hill Griffin Parkway north of Corkscrew Road), with participants twice crossing the mile-long Estero Parkway extension that goes over Interstate 75, connecting Three Oaks and Ben Hill Griffin parkways.
--Representatives from Swim Florida, which teaches competitive swimming to more than 600 youths in Lee, Collier and Charlotte counties, volunteered to help direct the race.
--The Estero Chamber of Commerce was an event sponsor.
--3-D Racing was represented in full force and managed to win most of the awards and prizes. If you are interested in seeing the complete list of race results, visit their website. http://www.3dracinginc.com/results/2009/bridgeroadtohunger09.htm
So where and when is the next race for Jay Berube? Who knows? Probably somewhere in Bonita Springs or Naples, and probably in the next couple of weeks. If you know me at all, you know I am VERY competitive!!! Stay Tuned!! Peace and Love, Jay Berube
